Build a smart mirror is aimed at being low cost and do it from available parts in Zero Ohm General Trading.
This project done for use a regular picture frame and mirrored window film to make a glass work into two way mirror. Then just enclose a monitor in a wooden frame , and attached the monitor to your mirror . finally run the software on a raspberry pi 3 and put it near or behind the monitor .
Smart mirror project includes a bonus alexa installation . the smart mirror can be work without this , but its better if your mirror have a voice assistant to ask question or control home automation .

Step one : prepare the two way mirror :
The most important and essential part of this project is a two way mirror . to prepare this component , apply gila mirrored windows film to any glass or acrylic . it work well for a glass and acrylic and its not take too much time , it take only 15 minutes .
Appling the film :
- Fill the bottle with water and add around 0.5 tablespoons of dish soap . just one squirt .
- Cut off 1 inh reflective film it should be larger than your surface in all direction .
- Clean the surface and spray it with dish soap mixture.
- Put scotch tape on the two corners of a film and pull it a part to remove the plastic protective liner , and then spray dish soap mixture between protective liner and the film sheet .
- Now the film sheet coated in soap mixture, then lay it flat on the surface.
- Squeegee down the middle sheet and then out the sides from the middle and keep spraying and smoothing to remove the all air bubbles.
- Use a scissors or a knife to cut a excess parts from the edge .
Now you are done keep it sit for a while before move it , keep it until the all soap mixture dries .
Step two: building the wood monitor enclosure:
In this step we need to stick the frame mirror and a wooden monitor enclosure together.
You can did this by cutting a hole in the rigid frame backing of the frame , and use the glue to glued some angle brackets to the backing to attach to the outside of the frame .
You can make the hole in the backing of the frame by using multiple passes of an exacto knife .then but the monitor flat over the hole. Centered all parts and used the all surface gorilla glue to fasten 4 angle brackets to each edge .
When the glue has set , you can simply screw the bracket into the monitor frame and as you like you can arrange your electronics behind the mirror its up to you .you can make some holes using a drill to pass a wire of a speaker and mic . and make another trough for the power cable by using a hand saw .
Step four : setting up your raspberry pi 3 model B :
So Now your hardware is ready , good job . now is the time to running your raspberry pi 3 model B with the Magic mirror and Alexa software . so the first step is just getting the operation system . its better if you used raspbain Jessie , because it has a great install guide . when the pi starts up , run the following :
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
you should also to follow a few steps to enable VNC Viewer , a remote desktop tool allow to access your RPI desktop from ayn computer on the network this lets you remotely once you finish the inatial setup without plugging in a keyboard and mouse .
On your Raspberry Pi, run the following commands to make sure you have the latest version of VNC Connect:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install realvnc-vnc-server realvnc-vnc-viewer
installing Magic mirror :
now you should to install the core application called magic mirror .
first I had to update NodeJs and electron by running the following commands :
curl -sL https://deb.nodesource.com/setup_4.x — Node.js v4 LTS "Argon" | sudo bash -
sudo apt-get install nodejs sudo
npm install electron
then download and install magic mirror using :
curl -sL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/MichMich/MagicMirror/master/installers/raspberry.sh | bash
If these ran successfully, you can just navigate to the MagicMirror directory, and run
now you have a smart mirror , and also it can be as a personal assistant , try it and dont look to your smart phone again .
